Comprehensive Speech and Language Evaluations

Does you child struggle with the complexity of language and higher expectations for understanding higher level vocabulary and concepts presented in the Middle School and High School Curriculum?
Does your child have difficulty following along with classroom lessons and remembering what was taught?
Does your child struggle with clearly expressing themselves in writing and within classroom discussions?

A Comprehensive Speech and Language Evaluation will help identify expressive and receptive language disorders which impact students’ academic success. With Deirdre’s expertise, testing results will be presented in applicable action steps that enable students to perform to their optimal potential at school. Deirdre’s Comprehensive Speech and Language Evaluations also includes academic recommended and suggested IEP goals and objectives to best address targeted skill deficits.

Social Pragmatic Speech and Language Evaluation

Does your child have limited friends and little interactions with friends outside of school?
Does your Middle Schooler or High Schooler struggle with engaging with peers socially and within group work at school?
Does your child have difficulty understanding nonliteral language (such as sarcasm, multiple meaning words, idioms, metaphors, analogies)?
Does your child struggle with making social inferences, drawing conclusions based on social observations and applying social problem solving skills?

A Comprehensive Social Pragmatic Language Assessment evaluates students’ understanding and application of Social Pragmatic Language skills as well as their understanding of the nuances of non-literal language, making inferences, social problem solving and understanding sarcasm.

Deirdre’s Comprehensive Social Pragmatic Language Evaluation will identify Pragmatic Language Disorders, as well as, pin point what aspects of social and non-literal language are interfering with your child’s ability to succeed socially as well as engage with peers within the school setting. With Deirdre’s vast experience, she is able to offer concrete steps to improving Social Language Disabilities so that your Middle Schooler or High Schooler will be able to engage with peers and adults successfully. Suggested IEP goals and objectives to best address targeted skill deficits will be included.

Does your child have the language skills to be successful after high school?

Does your child use clear and fluent expressive language to complete life tasks such as: make doctors appointments, request help by clearly stating what is wrong, send effective and clear emails, know what to communicate within emergency situations?
Does your child have adequate receptive language to understand life tasks such as: following verbal directions at work, understanding written directions, understanding emails, understanding medicine labels, train schedules, event tickets, ect.
Does your child know and follow the unwritten social rules within the work place?
Can your child advocate for their accommodations and needs within post-secondary environments?
Does your child understand all the vocabulary and components on thier paystub?
Can your child independently fill out a job application, understanding all direct and indirect questions and vocabulary within the application and job interview?
Can your child independently maintain friendships post-high school?

A Transition Speech and Language Evaluation is an integral part in Transition Planning for your child. Deirdre’s Transition Speech and Language Evaluation will identify which areas of Functional Expressive, Receptive, and Social Language that your child requires support and/or direct teaching.

Skills assessed include:

Functional Vocabulary
- Such as: banking, transportation, personal care, personal health, job application, pay stub
Understanding Spoken Language
- Following verbal directions, understanding spoken messages
Social Problem Solving
Advocating for Accommodations
Use of Expressive Language to complete common and integral life tasks
- Making appointments, emailing with use of formal and information language
Social language skills for post secondary success
- Job related social skills, social skills for maintaining friendships post-high school

The assessment includes a combination of standardized and non-standardized assessments, which are tailored to your child and their post secondary needs and goals. Suggested IEP goals, objectives ,and accommodations are included in the evaluation.
