Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Teen SLP?

The Teen SLP is a private practice based in Westport, CT that helps neurodiverse teens and young adults (ages 13–30) build the communication, social, and life skills needed for success at school, work, and in relationships. Through innovative group and individual sessions — including Virtual Reality (VR) experiences — we help clients gain confidence, independence, and stronger connections.

Who do you work with?

We specialize in supporting neurodiverse teens and young adults, including those with ADHD, autism, social communication challenges, executive functioning differences, and learning disabilities. Many of our clients are bright, capable young people who benefit from structured guidance to strengthen their social, conversational, and self-advocacy skills.

What kinds of groups do you offer?

We offer a variety of targeted social communication groups, including:

  • Adulting Group: mastering independence and building friendships in adulthood
  • Dating Bootcamp: learning the communication skills for healthy relationships
  • Job Skills Lab: building workplace communication and professionalism
  • Mastering Conversation: strengthening conversational flow and connection
  • High School & College Social Coaching: improving social awareness and executive functioning
  • Self-Advocacy Group: Participants learn how to ask for help, express opinions respectfully, handle feedback, and problem-solve when challenges arise — key skills for independence and success.
  • Campus Ready Group: Prepare for the transition to college or independent living with communication and executive functioning skills tailored to young adults heading to campus.

New groups are added each season — and can include community outings, game nights, or VR practice labs.

What makes your approach different?

Our approach blends evidence-based speech-language therapy with real-world practice. We use immersive tools like Virtual Reality, AI role play, and community-based experiences to help clients generalize skills beyond the therapy room. Every session is personalized to the client’s goals, strengths, and motivations — so progress feels authentic and empowering.

Do you offer individual sessions?

Yes, individual sessions are available for clients who want one-on-one support in areas such as social communication, executive functioning, interview preparation, or college/career transitions. Some clients begin individually before joining a group for real-world practice.

How long are sessions and how often do they meet?

Most groups meet once a week for 60 minutes over a 4–12 week cycle. Individual sessions are typically 45 minutes. Session length and frequency can be adjusted depending on the client’s needs and goals.

Where are sessions held?

We offer in-person sessions in Westport, CT (500 Post Road East). Select groups also meet virtually for clients in other states where we are licensed (MA, CT, NY). Some groups include off-site community outings for real-world practice in conversation, teamwork, and independence.

Do you accept insurance?

The Teen SLP is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. We provide detailed superbills that families can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We are happy to guide you through that process.

How do I know which group or service is the best fit?

We begin with a brief phone consultation to understand your goals, followed by an intake session to assess communication strengths and areas for growth. Based on that, we’ll recommend the best-fit program or group — or design a custom plan for your needs.

What outcomes can I expect?

Clients leave with stronger self-advocacy, improved social awareness, better conversational flow, and greater independence in real-world settings. Parents often share that their teen or young adult becomes more confident, engaged, and ready to take on adult responsibilities.
